  1. Rhode Island is the smallest state in the U.S., with only 1,214 sq. miles. 
  2. Over 500 states the size of Rhode Island could fit in the State of Alaska,
  3. yet Alaska has half the population.  Rhode Island was founded by Roger
  4. Williams, who was exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  The colonists
  5. overcame the Narragansett Indians in the Great Swamp Fight of 1675.  Rhode
  6. Islanders were amongst the first to revolt against the British by burning
  7. the British revenue cutter Gaspee in 1772.  Independence was declared on
  8. May 4, 1776.  Rhode Island became the thirteenth of the original thirteen
  9. colonies to ratify the Constitution on May 29, 1790.                    @
